International security studies
Understanding the nature of a discipline requires us to begin by considering its
central concepts. International Security Studies is no different. Much of the literature
in this fi eld has been and remains preoccupied with the meaning of ‘security’, but
despite everything that has been written over the past two decades, consensus
regarding a defi nition of this term has remained elusive. It is with this in mind that
we have established three key objectives for this book. The fi rst is to frame the
intellectual debates within the discipline of International Security Studies by
investigating a range of concepts and theories central to the fi eld. The second is to
provide an overview of the contemporary security environment, and in doing so the
book intends to cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from a consideration of armed
confl ict to subjects such as the environment, human rights, the impact of terrorism,
the role of international institutions, and food security. In the fi nal section we present
a number of key regional and thematic case studies with the intention of building
upon the most important aspects of the earlier sections.
