Market Liquidity Risk
During a recent visit to Paris, on my way to an important dinner appoint-
ment, I was stuck in rush-hour traffic on the Champs Elysees. Despite
efforts of looking for a way out of the misery, I was stuck, frustrated and
powerless. . . . Traders and other financial market participant may experi-
ence similar feelings of frustration when attempting to trade in an illiquid
market. The flow of trade in an illiquid market is hindered. Trade in such
markets are characteristically slow and costly or in the extreme case of
absent counterparties, impossible. Market liquidity is an assumed charac-
teristic of a well-functioning financial system and like traffic congestions
we usually start paying attention to it when broken.
