Strategic Communication in a Global Crisis National and International Responses to the COVID-19
The classic book Frankenstein, written two centuries ago by English author Mary
Shelley, bears an eerie descriptive of our pandemic world today. ‘Nothing is so
painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change’, Shelley wrote. Well,
say hello to our COVID-19 world, ‘a great and sudden change’ accompanied by
waves of pain jolting minds and lives worldwide through lockdowns, quarantines,
closed borders, travel restrictions, shuttered shops and restaurants, overcrowded
hospitals, empty theaters and opera houses and family gatherings and education
programs made virtual. Pain is evident in the mounting frustrations, protests and
sometimes violent confrontations over lockdowns, masks and vaccine mandates
depicted in media coverage which, depending on the politics of media ownership,
sometimes weaves disinformation and misinformation into its health messaging.
