Discourses, Modes, Media and Meaning in an Era of Pandemic
Late in December 2019, the world first learnt about the outbreak of a
cluster of viral pneumonia cases in Wuhan Province, China. Soon after,
on 9 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that
the Chinese authorities had identified a novel coronavirus as the cause
of these cases. The virus spread rapidly across the globe, and the out-
break of the initially unnamed disease, which eventually became known
as COVID-19, was upgraded to a pandemic on 11 March 2020 (World
Health Organization, 2020). No country was spared, and all aspects of
everyday life have been upended by the unfolding of the pandemic.
